North Island

The North Island is one of New Zealand's two main islands, known for its volcanic activity, geothermal areas, and vibrant Māori culture. It is home to roughly three-quarters of the country's population, including its largest city, Auckland, and the capital, Wellington.

Central North Island

Volcanic landscape: The Tongariro National Park, a dual World Heritage site, features three volcanoes—Mount Ruapehu, Tongariro, and Ngauruhoe. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing offers a challenging hike with panoramic volcanic views.

Geothermal areas: In Rotorua and Taupō, visitors can see active geothermal features like geysers, bubbling mud pools, and hot springs.

Māori culture: Rotorua is a major center for experiencing Māori culture through cultural performances, traditional feasts, and visits to villages and institutes like Te Puia.

Movie magic: Tour the Hobbiton Movie Set, located on a farm near Matamata, to explore the charming village from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film trilogies.

Underground wonders: The Waitomo Glowworm Caves offer tours that include floating along an underground river to see thousands of glowworms.

Huka Falls: Near Taupō, witness the powerful Huka Falls, where the Waikato River rushes through a narrow gorge.

Northern North Island

Cities and culture: Auckland, the "City of Sails," offers a diverse urban experience with museums, a bustling waterfront, and boutique shopping. It's a convenient gateway for flights from Australia.

Coastal beauty: The Bay of Islands, located in Northland, is known for its stunning water, scenic coves, and significant Māori cultural sites like the Waitangi Treaty Grounds.

Scenic forests: Explore the lush, jungle-like native forests of the Waitakere Ranges near Auckland or visit the Waipoua forest in Northland to see Tane Mahuta, New Zealand's largest living kauri tree.

Coastal drives and beaches: The Coromandel Peninsula features beautiful coastlines and beaches, including Hot Water Beach, where you can dig your own hot spring, and Cathedral Cove.

Southern North Island

Capital city: Wellington is New Zealand's capital, known for its vibrant arts scene, waterfront, and the national museum, Te Papa.

Art Deco architecture: Explore the city of Napier, which is famous for its unique Art Deco style.

Nature and wildlife: Visit the Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre near Mount Bruce to see native birds.
