He believes that empathy towards patients is the cornerstone for an ethical practice
and strives to achieve this in practice
He built the Smile Train supported Cleft leadership Center and over the years, his
team performed over 10,000 fully funded cleft procedures. He was the program's
project director from 2005 - 2023 (Feb) and was the fellowship director for over 25
cleft surgeons during this period. The fellowship programs are run under the
auspices of the Rajiv Gandhi University of health sciences and the International
Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. His trainees are successful cleft
surgeons in different parts of the world. Over the years, he has also engaged in
clinical research and has tried to contribute -through his publications of this
research -to the body of evidence for management of cleft deformities .
He is also a Professor of Maxillofacial Surgery at the Bangalore Institute of Dental
Sciences.
He is the former President of the Indian Society for cleft lip palate and
craniofacial anomalies (ISCLPCA) and the Indian Association of Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgery (AOMSI). In addition, he is the president of the International
Board for Certification of Specialists in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
He also is the Chairman of the Indian medical advisory council for Smile Train.

Shanghai Children's Craniomaxillofacial Deformity Screening and Diagnosis Center. He
currently serves as the Chairman of the Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Trauma and
Orthognathic Surgery of Chinese Stomatology Association, Deputy Chairman of the Oral
Genetic and Rare Diseases of Chinese Stomatology Association,etc.
Research Focus: Mechanisms of craniomaxillofacial development and deformities;
research and application of key technologies for digital and AI-based diagnosis and
treatment of craniomaxillofacial defects and deformities; development of new
biomaterials for craniomaxillofacial reconstruction.
In the recent five years, he has led over 20 research projects, including the
National Key Research and Development Program and National Natural Science
Foundation projects, and has published over 120 international peer-reviewed
articles.

Dr Alfred Lau works in private day surgery center. He is appointed as an honorary clinical associate professor of OMFS, HKU. He is currently the honorary consultant in OMS in Queen Mary Hospital and the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital.
Dr Lau held the position of the president of the HK Association of OMS from 2016 to 2019. He is the founder and past president of Young Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon Group of HK. Currently, he is appointed as the Advisor of the NextGen section and elected as an Executive Committee member (members-at-large) of the International Association of OMS. He is also elected as the Members-at-large for the Asian Association of OMS. He serves also as a Councilor of both the Asian and International Association of OMS. He also holds the position of an International Faculty of the AOCMF and as a founding committee member of the Hong Kong Association of Dental Sleep Medicine and the Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Implantologists. He Serves as a Hong Kong Dental Council examiner and a trainer in OMS for the specialist board in CDSHK. He is appointed as the Hong Kong Convention Ambassador by the HK Tourism Board of Hong Kong in 2020-2022.
He organizes and frequently speaks in conferences and courses regionally and internationally. He also organized international conferences such as ACOMS 2006, ICOMS 2017 and the upcoming ACOMS 2026 in Hong Kong. He has also been invited to be interviewed at TV programs, media and magazines, and he writes articles in relation to OMS topic in newspaper columns regularly. He recently published a book related to OMS to promote the knowledge to the public in Hong Kong.

Nicholas Kalavrezos

Nicholas Kalavrezos is a Senior Head and Neck Reconstructive Surgeon in the Head and Neck Centre at University College London Hospital with a background in Oral and Maxillo-Facial surgery. Nicholas is also the Lead Head and Neck Sarcoma Surgeon for the London Sarcoma Service. His clinical practice includes ablative and reconstructive surgery for the head and neck with a special interest in bone sarcomas and functional outcomes following reconstructive surgery. His clinical practice also includes surgical treatment of salivary gland tumours as well as thyroid surgery. Nicholas' research interests include applications of “tissue engineering” in head & neck reconstruction. Nicholas is a founding member of the “Centre for Reconstructive Surgery” at University College London and holds a Senior Lecturer post at the same Institution. He is also a member of the “Face Transplant Group” based at Royal Free Hospital aiming to perform the first face transplant in the UK. He has joint research projects in the Nanotechnology Lab of UCL on “tissue engineered bio-scaffolding” aiming to replace defects of the head and neck with tissue– engineered based micro-vascular flap reconstruction. The FORTE flap is a paradigm to this direction. Nicholas lectures regularly at national and international meetings and holds the position of the President Elect at the Executive Board of the European Association for Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery (EACMFS).
